Carolyn Mullet’s early life shaped her decision to become a garden designer. Growing up on the flat, fertile muck lands of Northern Indiana in a countryside dotted with Amish mint farms, she developed an aesthetic preference for simple and lean spaces. Her mother’s spirited obsession with flowers—lilacs, black-eyed susans, peonies, dutch iris, yarrow, summer phlox, and many other “passalongs”—encouraged Carolyn’s keen appreciation for plants.
Carolyn received her formal training in Residential Landscape Design from George Washington University. After more than two decades as a landscape designer for prominent design build firms, she launched Carex: Garden Design by Carolyn Mullet and now offers complete garden design and consultancy services in the Washington D.C. metro area.
Designing private gardens that fit the life of the client and the character of the site is Carolyn’s speciality. She creates outdoor spaces where people connect with nature while dining, relaxing, and playing. Whether the garden is modern or traditional, her goal is always to tread lightly by using sustainable design solutions for materials, water management, and plant choices.
