Beekman Place

For the back of a rocky, sloping, wooded lot overrun with deer, we developed a shade garden with a relaxed circular geometry. The homeowners wanted places for family activities and informal entertaining. Over several years, a deck, dining patio, outdoor kitchen, swimming pool, and spa were added. These new features required significant retaining walls and re-grading. With a deer fence in place, plantings were chosen in a happy collaboration with the owner. She was a keen gardener and challenged us to find as many brightly-colored, flowering plants for shade as possible. Later, in the sunnier front, we reduced the size of the asphalt driveway, re-graded for a gentler lawn, added an entry pergola and walk, and planted more bright flowers.
